Parent Update October 19, 2016

Dear Barbara Vick Village Families,

Information on a few upcoming events…

This Friday, October 21st is our first Child-Parent Activity day and we be making All About MeBooks. We will provide the binders, the pockets, markers, crayons, glue, and scissors. You need to bring:  pictures of your child: baby pictures, of birthday celebrations, holidays, special events, pets, favorite foods and stickers if you would like to decorate the pages.  The book will be kept at school.  During the school year we will be adding pages with your child.  At the end of the school year your child will take the book home.

Why is making an “All About Me” book important?  It is important because:

  • It helps your child develop his communication skills when he shares his book with the teachers and their friends.
  • Collecting the items to put in their books gives your child a reason to feel proud.
  • By choosing the items that are going to be put in their books they create a sense of security and identity.

We know that each child’s book will be unique, just like them! Classrooms have sign-up sheets outside the classroom doors. This is a day for you and your child, no siblings please.  If you are unable to attend, please ask a grandparent, aunt or uncle to accompany your child.  Remember this is an attendance day for your child.  If you do not come he/she will be marked absent.

Halloween is two weeks away, but many of the children have already begun talking about ghosts, pumpkins and their Halloween costumes.  Please be aware that here at Barbara Vick, we ask that parents do not dress their children in Halloween costumes for school. Halloween is fun and exciting, but can also be scary and children tend to be very emotional on that day (either with excitement or fear).   Our little kiddos still need help with self-regulation and adding Halloween costumes to the mix can make the school day difficult for them. As long as the students are interested in talking about pumpkins and ghosts and Halloween we will continue to have those conversations and encourage the children to explore their ideas using the classroom materials, just without their costumes from home.  Thank you for understanding and please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher or the school offices if you have any questions.  A letter with a more extensive explanation and our Holiday Policy are both attached to this email.

We are still having our Food Drive all that week.  Rather than parading throughout the neighborhood, we will hold the drive at school.  We are asking families to donate food from October 31st -November 3rd.  Boxes will be in the hallway.  All donations will be given to the Greater Food Depository.  In addition to canned and boxed food, monetary donations can be made online as well as at school.

Spirit Wear order forms went home today.  Orders will be accepted from Tuesday, October 18th through Friday, October 28th.  Only exact change will be accepted.  Payment may be made using cash or checks made out to Barbara Vick.
