Parent Update December 20, 2016

Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.

Good Afternoon Barbara Vick Families,

It’s beginning to look a lot like….a Midwest winter/Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa.  Forecasters have predicted that this winter may be a rough one – let’s make sure to keep safe and warm.

The holidays are such a wonderful time to be with family and friends; but they can be a stressful time as well – make sure to take time to experience the sentiments behind the holidays – family, togetherness, love, community, friendship, unity, peace and light…just to name a few.  Each family has their own traditions tied to the holiday season, make sure to find ways to include your children in these traditions.  Share the stories behind the tradition – teach the songs or jokes or recipes handed down through generations.  Our children will carry these traditions on through the next generations.

Giving Tree

A huge THANK YOU!!!! goes out to our school communities once again.  Every tag was taken from our giving trees and all gifts have been accounted for.  We thank you for your kindness, generosity and stewardship towards those in need.  What a wonderful lesson in caring for others.

Tree Decorating

Speaking of traditions, this year instead of the Annual sing-a-long, an event held off campus singing songs the children don’t necessarily sing during school, we decided to create a more meaningful experience for our students here on site.  We will instead provide materials for children to make bird feeders/ornaments in classrooms and invite families and children to use the ornaments to decorate trees on our school grounds.  Classrooms have been reading books about animals in winter and discussing what our role is in caring for birds, squirrels, etc. Natural and recycled materials will be offered to the children in order to create their designs; including bird seed, paper towels tubes, twigs and straw – items that will be helpful to our wildlife around the school rather than harmful.

Families are invited to come to school a bit early on Friday, December 23rd to join children and staff in decorating the trees and bushes on our school grounds.  We see this as an opportunity to build community within our families as well as share the talents and beauty of our students with the greater community.  Morning families are invited to come at 10:45am and afternoon families are invited to come at 2:00pm.  We will sing a few songs together, decorate the trees outside the school, wish one another a joyous holiday season and go on our way.

Winter Break

This year Winter Break takes place from Monday, December 26th, 2016 through Sunday, January 8th, 2017.  Classes resume for all staff and students on Monday, January 9th, 2017.  The staff at Barbara Vick & Barbara Vick Village wish all of our students and families a joyous holiday season filled with family, love, laughter, kindness and great food.

Parent-Child Activity Day

Our next Parent-Child Activity day is coming up on Friday, January 27th.  As a reminder this is a one hour attendance day in which a parent/guardian/grandparent/special person attends school with their Vick child to work on a special project.  Parent/child teams attend school in smaller groups (10 or less) in order to have sufficient work space.  This year’s activity will focus on making family flags that represent our cultural backgrounds as well as working on the children’s All About Me books. Please mark January 27th in your calendar and plan to attend.
