What is happening in our Room:

In our math lessons, we have been exploring sets. A set is any collection that is grouped together in a meaningful way. Sets are basic to our number system. Before we can figure out how many apples there are, we have to decide which things are “apples” and which things are “not apples”. We are now working with sets by matching and sorting many objects.

Attendance:

Attending school regularly is essential to students gaining the academic and social skills they need to succeed.  Starting as early as preschool, missing 10 percent of the academic year can lead to third graders unable to read proficiently, sixth graders struggling with coursework and high school student off track for graduation. (Ten percent of the academic year translates to 2 days of absence every month.) Parents, thank you for all you do to help your child attend school every day!

How Parents can Help:

–Talk to your children about things that are the “same” and “different”. Have them help you sort things – like the laundry!

–We need to have lots of things to sort in the classroom. Please send in buttons, nuts, bolts, screws, small sticks from the yard, etc. Even magazine pictures of different kinds of people, foods, flowers, etc.  Thank you!

March/April Newsletter

Hello 205

We began this month with the children’s desire to build different kinds of structures.  Mrs. Lawton let us borrow some beanie babies and the children quickly incorporated them into their block buildings.  They made houses and garages, stables and feeding areas.  As the month progressed the children also used different animals when they would build.  Through their use of different animals we began our discussion of where animals live.  They now have become interested in building an area where the forest animals can live.  We showed them different possibilities of what we could build and we continue to explore the different materials that we will need for our project.  Stay tuned for how we develop what we are calling our “Fairy Tree House”.

February Newsletter

Hello 205

This month we began with our exploration of shapes.  As the days passed the children also began sorting and classifying not only the shapes they were learning about, but other objects as well. They’ve noticed the similarity and differences in themselves and talk about it in our group meetings. Please continue these conversations at home about what is the same and what is different.  This will help us as we sort and classify items in the classroom.

The children are still interested in the birds that come by our window.  They’ve created drawings and paintings of birds and feathers in our art studio.  Stop by our room to see their work.

Upcoming Events:

v Parent Child Activity

Friday, October 17, 2014

Please choose your session for the first or second hour.

Description:  Our first Parent/Child Activity will build on our learning about friends.  Each child will create an “All About Me” book describing himself/herself.  The books will help us get to know each other better. The books will stay in our classroom and will be constantly revisited by the children throughout the year.

Don’t forget:  Please talk to your child about their “All About Me” book, and the pictures to be included in it.
