Pet Study

For the past two weeks we have been interested and talking about pets. We have talked about the pets we have and also the pets we wish we had. The children brought in pictures and together we talked about our pets, shared stories, and drew pictures. We will continue this study and will read more stories about pets. Please stop by and see some of drawings outside of our classroom.

Math Corner

Room 203 has been recognizing and making sets. The children have begun sorting and comparing objects we have in the classroom (buttons, random objects, rocks, beads, etc.) We have been taking collections of objects and looking to see what is the same and what is different about them. We then place the objects into groups according to what we find out.

Try this at home!

Can you and your child make sets of things you find in your home?

Parent/Child Activity

Our first Parent/Child Activity is on October 16. This is an hour activity for you and your child. We will be creating “All About Me” books. We will have a sign-up sheet outside the classroom closer to the activity date. Please start collecting pictures you would like to include in your book. More information regarding this activity will be sent home.

REMINDER:

Due to school policy, the children cannot come to school on Halloween in costumes.

Please send in or email a picture of your child dressed up in their costume. We will display these pictures and have the children to talk about their day.

THE CHICKS ARE HERE!

Our chick study has begun. The eggs were placed inside of our classroom incubator on April 26th. In 21 days, hopefully we will be hearing the “peep, peep” sounds of our baby chicks coming into the world!

The children are so excited as we count down the days until the day of the hatching. Pictures are being drawn, stories are being read, and our job of the daily egg and chick inspector has begun. The classroom is a buzz of excitement as we prepare for the big day. Please stop in to see our incubator and eggs if you have a chance!

Room 203 Update:

Identity Panels:
Please stop in our classroom to see our new class identity panels. The children drew their first self-portrait and in the Spring the children will draw another portrait to complete the panel. They also made a portrait using a variety of materials to represent their facial features. The panels represent each child’s identity and what makes them unique.
Classroom Agreements:
We have been talking with the children about the importance of our Classroom Agreements. We are focusing on how we take care of ourselves, how we take care of our friends, and how we take care of our classroom/school. The children have been discussing what that means to them. These Agreements will be posted in our classroom.

April 2015

The Chicks are coming!

Tuesday, April 14 we will be receiving our chick eggs. The chicks will take 21 days to hatch and we will be observing the process.  Once the chicks hatch on May 4th, they will stay at school until Friday May 4th.

This is a month long project where the children will be studying chick growth and development and will learn new vocabulary. Each child will be assigned an egg to watch in our incubator as the process happens. We will also create a class brooder box for our new baby chicks to live in once they have hatched.  The children will learn about what the chicks will need in the brooder box and why it is so important for their growth. Please stop by the classroom to check on the eggs and the chicks and experience this process with us!

We would like to give a big thank you to all of the chaperones who volunteered for our fieldtrip to the Children’s Museum! We had a great day exploring the museum!

Winter Study

These days the frigid weather seems to be at the front of everyone’s mind and so this will be the focus of our learning over the following weeks. Students will play with snow and ice in our sensory table, and spend time exploring a snow-like material, shaving cream. We will read books about winter, snow, and arctic animals, and incorporate winter fun into our literacy and math learning. We invite families to extend this learning into the home. For example, you can look at the weather report with your child each morning, discuss with him/her what the numbers for the temperature mean and read and discuss the different words used to describe the weather.

Please label your child’s coat, hat, and sweatshirt with their name or initials. Many children have the same type of winter clothing.

Our tree study is still going strong! We have read many stories about trees, graphed items that come from trees, such as leaves, seeds, pine cones and berries. We made trees from twigs and feathers for our block room too. We are planning a nature walk to Marquette Park to view the trees and to collect natural items from the trees in our community. If you are interested in joining us please let us know.

Questions you can ask your child at home about trees:
I wonder why leaves fall from the trees.
What color leaves do you see among the trees?
What kinds of animals are found in the trees?
